The History of R and H Painting

Minnesota commercial painters

Gordon Raisanen and two of his close friends (brother and cousin) started painting in the early 70’s in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis. They cut their teeth working for some of the most fastidious customers in the Midwest. They formally founded R&H (Raisanen Halonen) Painting in 1974.

As their business grew, they became more interested in joining the commercial market that was rapidly growing in downtown Minneapolis and the surrounding area. They spent a lot of years and many thousands of man hours painting downtown, everything from department stores to the sky-way system. They also did countless schools, apartment buildings, retail (Menards, Home Depot, Victorias Secret) and other projects.

Over time, R&H began to take on projects of a more industrial nature which included waste-water treatment facilities throughout the Midwest, manufacturing facilities, shipping depots, as well as other sandblasting and coatings operations. Other projects began to include large steel structures, bulk tanks, and community pools.

In 1983, Randy Raisanen sold out to John and Gordy so he could pursue other interests. John (Halonen) and Gordon (Raisanen) had a pretty good business throughout the 80’s and 90’s. In 1996, Gordon bought the rest of the company from John and continued painting operations while he went to law school. A few years after graduating law and opening his own practice, Gordon began to wind down the painting company from 2003 until about 2007.

In 2007 Grant Raisanen decided to reinvigorate R&H after several years spent working for other painting contractors. Grant had previous experience as an employee at R&H throughout his earlier  years. Gregory Raisanen worked as a partner since that time and still does today. Bryce Raisanen (Grant’s brother) decided to join the business in 2010.
